It definitely got one.

Antonio Giovinazzi put the #51 Ferrari on pole in the closest Hyperpole session in the championship’s history, and then there was a race at the front from lights to flag. It was won by the #8 Toyota of Brendon Hartley, Ryo Hirakawa and Sebastien Buemi, giving the once-dominant marque its 50th WEC victory. Ferrari can be beaten, and it will be a fun fight to watch.

In LMGT3, a WRT BMW won (shocker), but it shouldn’t have. Garage 59’s step up to WEC almost began in glorious fashion. The McLaren snatched pole and led late into the race before conking out with an alternator issue. I expect them to get much more airtime this year.

A guy like Estre doesn’t sign a factory Hypercar deal only for his team to pull out of WEC, so it seems only right. He does not deny the rumor, but he does affirm that he will still drive for Porsche next year, meaning in IMSA.

This connects with a rumor that Mike Conway will leave Toyota to join the Ford Hypercar program, so Estre would be filling that seat. There’s a lot bubbling under the surface for Toyota drivers, with growing influence over Haas F1, a new GT3 car coming soon, lots of pieces to move around.

The new vice president of competition and race engineering at IndyCar is Mike O’Gara, an Indiana native who has been an executive at Chip Ganassi Racing for 12 years. He established Ganassi’s Cadillac IMSA program, in addition to helping make Ganassi as unassailable as it currently is in IndyCar. Seems like the right guy to be in charge of, among other things, rolling out the new race car.

It is exceedingly well financed, effectively run, and successful. But the step up in complexity and precision called for to operate the upcoming McLaren LMDh is such that United had to abandon its plans to upgrade its current 60,000-square-foot facility and find a new one. That’s what it takes to run at the front of the World Endurance Championship these days.

They bounced back from penalties and snatched the lead with under 10 minutes to go. Fantastic race.

As usual in the ELMS, there are a lot of well known young hopefuls trying to stand out, and a few of them did. Doriane Pin — much to her fans’ delight — returned to sports cars, and she, Richard Verschoor, and Giorgio Roda ran up front all race long and landed on the LMP2 ProAm class podium for Duqueine Team. Jamie Chadwick, still stuck in ELMS while her coworkers go on to warm up her Genesis Hypercar seat for her, finished fourth outright for IDEC Sport with Laurents Hörr and Valerio Rinicella.

The big bummer of the race, I’m sorry to say, was the fate of Jack Doohan. This was his first race since all that messy Super Formula stuff fell through, and when he got in, he brought the car into the top five and briefly led the race. The fight was on for second place all the way to the end, but after light contact making the pass for P2, something went wrong with the right rear with one minute to go, and Jack limped across the line in sixth. The team got a 10-second penalty post-race for speeding under full-course yellow, demoting them to P7.

Chin up, Jack. There’s more racing to go.

They’ll weigh in at 950 kilograms and 563 horsepower (or 420 kilowatts, for the modern sophisticate), driven by a Gibson 3.4-liter twin turbo V6. Expanding from one OEM to two — ORECA and Ligier — is a big step, as it’ll make them compete on price.

UPDATE 4/21: As friend of the site @putdorianedown.bsky.social reminds me, there are actually technically four OEMs in the current LMP2 regulations, but everyone stopped using the non-ORECAs, so it’s a de facto one-make category. Hopefully this 2028 process will be a bit more competitive.

This category is well established around the world in its current form. It’s at the perfect intersection of being a stepping stone to the top level for both teams and drivers, a competitive place for pros piecing a season together to get more seat time, and at least somewhat insulated from the rich and untalented by LMP3. Now is a great time to push it forward.

Both cars are gray. They aren’t the same gray; they are different grays.

Anyway, the car will make its racing debut at the FIA WEC season opener, the 6 Hours of Imola, from April 17–19.

It would be an understandable move anyway, but it turns out to have been because he has landed a big job with the ACO itself. As deputy director in charge of competition, it will be Famin’s job to implement the ACO’s technical and competitive roadmap. Leaving a team and company who could not hang under the current rule set, I am sure Famin is full of new ideas.

Well, Ferraris are no longer enough for Tony Fire. Last year he needed to go demonstrate that he can also win in ORECA LMP2s, which he did in the Asian Le Mans Series twice, finishing P2 in the drivers’ championship. Now the Ferrari-affiliated AF Corse team, who ran the Cetilar Racing-entered LMP2 Fuoco drove last year, is putting him in the ELMS car. You see, AF Corse won the ELMS LMP2 Pro/Am titles in 2023 and 2024, but last year they slipped to a lowly fourth (though they did win the season opener). I guess they just need a little more Tony Fire to get back to the top.

Who knows how profitable any of this is, but they seem like the company that takes motor racing the most seriously in the sense that it’s the reason they exist, and if anything their road cars are derived from their race cars rather than the other way around. They’re also some of the best performing and driver-focused road cars in the world, so they’re pulling it off.

This year, we’ll see their LMDh hypercar on track ahead of its racing debut next year, and McLaren execs are doing some press about how they’re justifying this effort. They’re calling it Project Endurance. They’re going to make and sell track-only consumer versions and host driving events with them, that sort of thing. Obviously this is for the mega-elite — McLaren’s GT cars were already very high-end, and this is going up-market — but maybe it’s also the kind of thing that convinces the mega-elite to stay invested in motorsports.

As for Cadillac, not spreading the 31 too thin is obviously a great call. Wayne Taylor is obviously behind AXR in IMSA, Wayne wants to win Le Mans with his boys, that’s fine, but more importantly, JOTA is clearly ready to do it. Concentrating all the 31’s firepower on IMSA gives them the best possible chance of toppling Penske and Porsche.

I am all in favor of Doriane continuing to raise her profile in sports cars, especially if Mercedes can finally be convinced to go prototype racing, but I also believe it’s a good place for her to be while we see if the hands of fate deal her a Formula 1 seat.

Having seen them win in Daytona and then have that amazing run, consider me fully invested.

The competition is so fierce. But to date, the fiawec.tv offering was definitely up there. Geoblocking in countries with TV agreements was the least of its worries; the app was terrible and the stream was unreliable. It wasn’t good at anything it was supposed to do, and it was too expensive. Today, though, that service is gone, and an info page explains that there will be a new FIA WEC+ streaming service this year with global rights. No geoblocks! What a concept!

Team principal Cyril Abiteboul says that one of GMR’s explicit aims “has always been to raise the profile of motorsport in South Korea,” which is something I have wondered about. Hyundai is already a force in world-championship-level motorsports; it’s not like the Genesis hypercar program is the first attempt. Why isn’t racing a bigger deal in Korea? Why have the big race events held there so far failed?

Last year’s win was a wonderful story, both because Kubica’s comeback from injury is a miracle and because the #83 is the nominally privateer Ferrari 499P that beat the two red ones. Ferrari still did everything in its power to make sure the yellow one could win, of course, but clearly it’s a more fun entry.

Speaking of fun, Ye Yifei was definitely having it in Daytona. We spoke to him the day before the race:
