Hunter McElrea only has one IndyCar start, and it didn’t go great, but he was runner up in the 2023 IndyNXT championship and a heavily decorated IMSA sports car driver, so it definitely seems like a good idea to have him around the paddock.

I don’t want to give Max Verstappen credit for everything, but there sure are a lot of teams bringing cars to the N24 this year to try and beat him.

It cleansed the palette of that niggling feeling about losing seven hours of the Daytona 24 to fog. It provoked some crazy driving — some of it heroic, some of it stupid — all of which made for great entertainment. And, my favorite part: Just as people who prefer European-style endurance racing rules were becoming fed up with all the yeehaw wave-arounds and restarts and starting to use the dreaded A-word (“artificial”), we got exactly the kind of late-race yellow they were sure was coming, and everybody kept their heads. The restart happened, everybody raced, and we got a completely satisfying finish. Well, unless you hate Penske or Porsche or both.

Yes, it was another Porsche Penske Motorsport 1–2 with the 7 ahead of the 6, and the GTP pecking order was more or less unchanged from Daytona, but it was a bit more of a dogfight this time. Both cars had their incidents — including the 6 breaking its nose on the back of the 31 Cadillac under safety car, which would have amused me if I didn't always want the 31 to win — but they recovered through typically flawless Penske execution. Intriguingly, what decided the finishing order was actually a rather brazen on-track pass.

With just over an hour remaining in the race, the team called in a position swap because the 6 car, with Kevin Estre driving, was on fresher tires. Seven minutes later, Felipe Nasr in the 7 pounced on him in the G-loaded last corner and took the lead back, which Estre said happened because he was dutifully following team orders and Nasr was not. That is amusing to me. Good on you, Felipe. Way to get Porsche its 20th overall win at Sebring.

Porsche’s only serious challenge in GTP was again from Cadillac, with the 31 starting on pole and having the pace (and the Jack Aitken) to stay a threat, but in a heartening development for Caddy fans, the Wayne Taylor cars were finally in contention this time as well. There was a Cadillac three-ship running together late in the race that looked pretty dangerous. In fact, the 10 finished on the podium, but it was taken away in post-race tech for excess camber, which gave P3 to the 31. It is great to see WTR up there, though. They hadn’t really been pulling their weight.

There are no Porsches in LMP2, of course, but the equivalents last weekend were the United Autosports cars, who also finished 1-2. They did get a race from Spike, who was back in purple, but the AO Racing dragon-car got caught out by the timing of a full-course yellow. Tower had a pretty good race, too — which isn’t the greatest of looks for Sébastien Bourdais, who recently quit the team — but they got outdone by United on a restart. There was also some spectacularly bad driving in LMP2, most of it well within LMP2 stupidity norms, but Parker Thompson, driving the #52 in his second-ever LMP2 race, brutally murdered the DragonSpeed Corvette for absolutely no reason.

In GTD Pro, it was more Porsche, but not at all in a boring way. The winner was the Manthey #911, a truly remarkable showing even for Manthey. To swoop down upon U.S. racing like they did and then win their first Sebring is an incredible display of execution, but to do it with Nick Tandy hounding you all day in the AO Racing #77 — the People’s Porsche in this country — is all the more unlikely. So that was the other class with a Porsche 1–2. The GTD Porsches were not as dominant — particularly the Manthey #912 — but the Wright Motorsports #120 did make the podium with two overtakes in the last two laps. All that plus a superb debut of the new Carrera Cup car? Pretty good weekend for Porsche.

As for the other debutante, the Lamborghini Temerario GT3, it didn’t instantly turn around Pfaff’s fortunes, but it did finish the race! I can’t wait to see how they go on a less turbulent track.

But. The legendary GT3 drive of the weekend was that of the #21 AF Corse Ferrari. That Tony Fire cannot be stopped. After taking their lumps in drive-through penalties for racing… you know, hard, Antonio Fuoco absolutely tore the field apart to win the #21’s second IMSA race of the last three. Lilou Wadoux drove in both of those races, of course, and she was unstoppable as well. I have a new favorite Ferrari 296.

Even so, there is another GTD car upon which I urge readers not to sleep. The #27 Heart of Racing Aston Martin Vantage of Zacharie Robichon, Tom Gamble, and pole winner and Formula 1 offspring Eduardo Barrichello just went back-to-back on the podium, taking P2 in class at Sebring. “Dudu,” as Barrichello insists on being called, now leads the drivers’ championship.

In summary, IMSA racing rules.

Starting the year off with the Daytona 24 is a tradition that should never be questioned, but it does leave the paddock with a bit of a hangover. After the gap, though, Sebring is like another first race of the year, and some programs do treat it as such since it’s such good testing environment (in that it is constantly trying to break your car). The Aston Martin Valkyrie debuted there last year, for example, rather than at Daytona. And with this race’s long history, most teams still like to bring a little extra flair to the second round.

Good examples to look out for this year: Pfaff Motorsports will introduce the Lamborghini Temerario GT3 to the world after having one last crack in the Huracán in Daytona, and yes, it will be dressed in plaid. AO Racing will bring Roxy — the pink one — to her first endurance race. And Porsche Penske Motorsport has bedecked its Porsche 963s in Mobil 1 liveries harkening back to the swirly livery of the Porsche 911 GT1 in 1996 — not the most attractive livery to my eye, but a pretty famous one nonetheless.

One other, less heralded debut at Sebring this week is the new Porsche 911 Cup car. Porsche Carrera Cup North America will run its first two 40-minute races with the Type 992.2 car, which also has a brand new Pirelli tire. There are 27 entries for Sebring. I know a lot of people don’t watch single-make series, but this is a pretty big upgrade for the Cup car, and c’mon, you gotta watch a new race car at least once.

Well, mostly back. We’re about to see it roll out for the 12 Hours of Sebring next weekend.

What makes up for it is that Mustang Sampling is back with JDC-Miller MotorSports, who ran the Mustang Sampling Cadillac DPi-V.R that won the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2021. This will be the livery for the rest of the season (bye bye, banana boat), and they have switched the number from 85 to 5, the classic Mustang Sampling IMSA number.

Surely it helped having works driver Marco Mapelli fresh off the Daytona 24 to run the Mountain, but the team also says they’ve just dialed in their operations this year.

It would be fun to see some solid results for the Huracan in the year when the Temerario is rolling out. Pfaff Motorsports — Mapelli’s team for his IMSA endurance outings — will be debuting its Temerario at the 12 Hours of Sebring March 18–21, their goal being simply to finish the famously bumpy race.

He will drive the No. 68 Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2 for RAFA Racing alongside Tyler Gonzalez in the Silver class. This is an amazing roster for an amazing multi-car team.

As for Cadillac, not spreading the 31 too thin is obviously a great call. Wayne Taylor is obviously behind AXR in IMSA, Wayne wants to win Le Mans with his boys, that’s fine, but more importantly, JOTA is clearly ready to do it. Concentrating all the 31’s firepower on IMSA gives them the best possible chance of toppling Penske and Porsche.

Thus I was bummed to see that they’ve decided to pull out of the Sebring round, meaning the M2 Racing will only run at three IMSA races this year. It will now debut at the COTA round May 8–10. They’ve decided they bit off a little more than they can chew for the first year, it appears. They did sweeten the deal, though, offering the top three in the championship a GT4 test.

For one thing, it’s the first of two race weekends where IndyCar and NASCAR will split the bill; the Craftsman Truck Series will run at St. Pete, and IndyCar will run at NASCAR’s March Phoenix weekend. It’s almost as though things are starting to gel in 21st-century American motor racing finally.

But have you seen who is driving at St. Pete?

Sebastien Bourdais is doing the Mazda MX-5 Cup race (what????)

Dario Franchitti is doing the truck race

A lesser known but no less talented Andretti, Adam, is combining Truck Series duties with his usual (and dominant) Trans Am running this year, and he will be in a truck at St. Pete

No less than Mayor James Hinchcliffe is also doing the truck race, returning to the site of his first IndyCar win to make his first NASCAR appearance (all while running back and forth to the booth for his IndyCar TV duties)

UPDATE FEB 18: Earl Bamber is also doing the MX-5 Cup race

UPDATE FEB 21: Colin Braun is driving the Ram free agent truck

This all makes me wonder: Who will the guest star crossovers be at Phoenix?

There will be talk about whether the 2026 Rolex 24 at Daytona was a “good race.” This is the sort of thing motorsports fans spend their time between races arguing about, and I do understand it. We are all here to process the lived reality of motor racing into its eternal form as lore, and since human beings can’t simply fathom all of eternity, that job requires filtering mechanisms like ranking and rating. We need to know whether this year’s Rolex is one we need to recommend to other students of the sport — whether it’s one to spend more time on after the fact. Plus, that’s just the psychology of racing — winners and losers — applied to racing itself.

As a motor race, I would rank 2026 behind 2025 — the other one for which I was present — as well as 2024 and 2023, the others I’ve watched in full. I would rate it a solid B; there wasn’t as much action as the Rolex has recently displayed, but nor was there as much stupidity (outside of LMP2). And yes, there was the matter of that 6.5-hour caution that, one could argue, deprived us of a quarter of the race. Would I recommend watching the 2026 Rolex all the way through in real time? Absolutely not.

But none of that bears on whether this race was good in the sense that matters: Was this race a good event? Was it good that this race happened the way it did? In order to answer that, there is so much more to incorporate than can be gleaned from timing and scoring.

And when I answer “yes,” I need you to empathize with me here as I strain to find a way to communicate how emphatically I mean it. I am often accused of being prone to exaggeration, and I don’t deny it, but it’s hard to find better ways to express how deeply I feel the things that ignite my furious passion than to just smother you in superlatives. And so, knowing that about me, understand that when someone asks me how Daytona was this year, I have to hold myself back from saying something like, “It was as powerfully good and important as any motorsports event I could possibly imagine.”

Why would I say this about a B-grade race that was only the fourth-best (out of four) Daytona 24 I have watched? Because I find that the better a race event is, the less the on-track quality can drag it down. The race can lift a great event up, to be sure, and given that this was a 24-hour, four-class race with a maxed out grid that had close racing at the front of each class to the very end, I’d say this race did that. But those five days in Daytona were some of the happiest I’ve spent doing anything, and it couldn’t possibly matter less to me that the race itself wasn’t among the greatest of all time.

First of all, there are many races during the Rolex gathering, and the other ones were all great. Both MX-5 Cup races were incredible. The four-hour Michelin Pilot Challenge race was tense in both classes. The historics… well, I don’t really pay attention to the racing in that series, but seeing all those legendary IMSA cars flying around Daytona was breathtaking. This trip would have been worth it to me as a race fan if there hadn’t been a 24-hour race at all.

What a privilege to see legendary cars from multiple Daytona eras race again

But there was, and the bewildering array of cars, teams, and drivers from around the world made the “World Center of Racing” sign presiding over it all absolutely true. The fireworks at 10:00 p.m. during the Rolex 24 are the New Year’s celebration of the racing world. And more people watched it than ever before.

People talk about the amazing access at IMSA races, and they’re right. Honestly, I can’t believe how painfully NASCAR is shooting itself in the foot by not having exactly the same levels of access and length of event as its wholly owned sports car subsidiary does. But you have to see it to believe it; I’ve never felt more Part of Something than I do at the Rolex. I learned last year that I can simply plan ahead to meet the racing figures of my choice, and then it will happen exactly as planned.

I wanted to meet Will Power and Chaz Mostert, so I simply went and did so

This access and connection is not limited to the easy breezy moments. Dramatic things happen every day of a long race event like this. When one of my favorite cars — the 13 Autosport GTD Corvette — caught fire as Ben Green pulled it into the pit box at the end of night practice, we rushed to the garage area and — staying well out of the way, of course — got to be there with the team to express our sympathy and make sure everyone was okay (they were).

On a lighter note, the Rolex is such a who’s-who of racing that somebody is bound to know somebody, and that will get you into all kinds of adventures. In our case, the known somebody (known by Ginny and Dave) was Susan Jary of CSJ Motorsports who gladly took us on a tour of the McLaren parts hauler.

IMSA really rolls out the red carpet for fans, too, and it’s not just in the exclusive areas. I did not expect, for example, to get a chance to stick my head inside of the Porsche 963 RSP and see the cup holder for myself.

This year, there was also the small matter of it being the Valkyrie’s Daytona debut.

Watch on YouTube

But more than anything else, the greatest thing about the Rolex is being surrounded by that many people who love racing just as much as you do, whether they have a hard card or not. We come from all over and experience the Rolex 24 in radically different ways, but we’re all the same. We’re racers. We may feel isolated sometimes in our day-to-day lives, but whether we’re in the hundreds of thousands at the track or the millions more watching online, we’re all together in Daytona at the end of January.

Nighttime at Daytona is the most singularly magical thing about the place, and we can’t talk about it this year without talking about the fog. The race was under caution for poor visibility for six hours and 33 minutes — 121 laps — the longest in the history of the 24 Hours of Daytona. I happened to be filming the high banks at NASCAR turn 3 just before the caution was thrown, and you can see how iffy the conditions were.

Watch on YouTube

These weren’t the only foggy conditions of the weekend, so we wondered what was different about the overnight gloom, and we learned that it’s really a simple, binary call. Can every flag stand see its neighbors in either direction well enough to communicate visually? If yes, we stay green. If not, we go yellow and stay that way until the corner workers can all see one another again. The fog got too thick to see from one corner to another around 12:45 a.m., and it didn’t clear up enough to go green until 7:19.

I understand why people watching at home may have been bummed out by this, although if you were in the Western Hemisphere, I hope you took the opportunity to go to bed. Luke and I did not, however. We stayed up the whole time and wandered around a race track under conditions we had never imagined.

This fog was historic. I’m sure we’ll have more to say about it in future posts. But what I want to say to you now is that I loved every second of it. I loved the people we met and walked around with during it. I loved the amusing scenes of competitors struggling to keep their heads in the game behind the pit boxes. I loved sneaking around the track while anyone who cared was asleep. And I loved, loved, loved watching and hearing the cars going around. How often do you get hours to listen to your favorite race car motors motoring quietly enough to listen with your bare ears? I can still hear them now.

Watch on YouTube

I suppose that two Rolexes in a row makes it a tradition. Luke and I went into last year’s Rolex wondering what it would be like to create some racing traditions together. Now we know. It’s the best thing ever.

We went into the 2025 racing season believing maybe we could make a real project out of this. We thought we would build a website. We even had a name for it. Well, we’ve entered the 2026 racing season now, and it’s all real. Daytona has left its mark on us, and we’ve left our mark on it.

I have been to some crowded things — including last year’s Rolex 24 — and this was more crowded. IMSA reports 180,000 people attended, and 1.1 million people watched on TV, which is what NASCAR and F1 typically get. That is huge. Hooray for sports car racing.

He quickly put my mind at ease with the news that he will be racing Precision Racing LA’s Toyota GR Supra in Pirelli GT4 America full-time this year.

Ryan bounces back and forth between IMSA and SRO, which is a normal thing for a coaching-level pro to do as up-and-comers such as Karl Forman enlist their services in whatever series suits their program. Forman is graduating from the GR Cup series, where Eversley coaches many drivers, so they’ve worked together and have chemistry, and they’re staying in the same OEM ecosystem. And going forward, if you want to build a track record right now with any GT brand, I dare say it’s Toyota.

That story may even have complicated the deal, which would suck. Listen to #TWISC for more details.

Given how long the Acura ARX-06 has been in service in IMSA, it is natural to wonder why it hasn’t entered the WEC yet, and I look forward to learning more about that if possible, but as friend-of-TF @putdorianedown.bsky.social points out, there are many pieces of such a project that are just now falling into place:

All I need to know is, it seems good for motorsports that it’s moving up the tech tree from grease monkeys in garages because that makes it worth continuing to invest in.

Last year’s win was a wonderful story, both because Kubica’s comeback from injury is a miracle and because the #83 is the nominally privateer Ferrari 499P that beat the two red ones. Ferrari still did everything in its power to make sure the yellow one could win, of course, but clearly it’s a more fun entry.

Speaking of fun, Ye Yifei was definitely having it in Daytona. We spoke to him the day before the race:

Michelin has rolled out its new, crazy-looking endurance tire at Daytona, and it performed superbly. Toyota and Ferrari only compete in the FIA WEC, and thus Aston Martin, BMW, and Cadillac will have an advantage of many hours of real running data over them. I have an idea of how they could fix that for next time.

Execs have said the GR GT should be on the grid in Daytona in 2027, and the Lexus factory program will be rebranded Gazoo Racing.

When I talked to the Vasser Sullivan Lexus drivers at the Daytona 24 last week, they all seemed rather ready to dispense with the Lexus RC F GT3, which is a platform nearly as old as the DW12 Indy car. I don’t blame them. The success of GT3 as a category is almost impossible to exaggerate, and that has led to a long reign for some of its most glorious examples, as well as compounding gains through multiple evolutions from several OEMs. But it’s time for some new race cars, and we’ll see if it’s Toyota or Lamborghini that kicks off the avalanche.

I was eavesdropping.

Should-be FIA president Tim Mayer is traveling to Daytona today where he says he will meet with NASCAR CEO/chairman and IMSA team owner Jim France during the Rolex 24 weekend. Mayer is looking for his next move after his doomed but symbolically important FIA presidential campaign, and he says it would be nice to find a “paying gig.”

Mayer was catching up with an old friend — Julie Bentley, president of the International GT racing series — at the gate for a Wednesday afternoon flight from Atlanta to Daytona Beach. I was, uh, well, eavesdropping, and now we are all on the flight to Daytona together. I am sitting next to a guy who spots for Graham Rahal in IndyCar. He used to spot for the RLL BMW prototypes at IMSA races, but that working relationship did not survive BMW’s transition of that program to the European W Racing Team that runs the cars in the World Endurance Championship. He wasn’t going to be working the Rolex at all, but he got a last-minute call from a friend to spot for the Era Motorsport #18 LMP2 running Jacob Abel, Ferdinand Habsburg, Naveen Rao, and Logan Sargeant.

Anyway, that’s all completely irrelevant. Mayer gave a fascinating account of the FIA presidential campaign and how self-appointed-president-for-life Mohammed bin Sulayem recruited select regional leaders to lock out the ballot for him. No new scandals or anything were revealed, but Mayer figures one will bring down MBS sooner or later.

“Mohammed is one of those guys where you’re either an enemy or you’re a future enemy,” Mayer told Bentley, and this paranoid style of motorsport governance will surely fail, as motor racing runs on friendships, and MBS will eventually have none.

Mayer was seated in first class. I intended to say “Thank you for trying” to him as I passed in the aisle, but he was extremely conspicuousky fake-listening to his phone while looking out the window.

Even despite massive upgrades on multiple cars, the GTP field is only separated by 11kg in weight and 2.9% in second-stage power. GT3 doesn’t look too bad either, even with the McLaren coming back after a year away.

Pairs amusingly with the new censorship rules, though, doesn’t it?

It’s getting the new LMP3 generation, the new single-make BMW M2 Racing class is joining its four two-hour endurance rounds at Sebring, COTA, VIR, and Road America — which are also new — and now those endurance rounds have been entitled the IMSA Airbnb Endurance Challenge and will be their own championship-within-a-championship like the Michelin Endurance Cup in the big leagues.

When I first saw this news, I was worried the whole championship had been renamed, and I hated that. Nothing worse than an automotive sponsor being replaced by something irrelevant. But now that I understand that it’s actually creating a new sub-competition endurance-focused teams can target — a dynamic I find works really well in the WeatherTech championship — I have come around completely. It adorably connotes the idea of traveling to these four rounds and renting a place to stay, which is something I heartily encourage people to do.

Instead, Penske went with three-driver lineups in both cars (including Laurin Heinrich, which rules), even though it is very normal for GTP teams — including Penske — to field four drivers in the 24-hour race.

I and many other observers find it a little strange to choose to stretch the drivers further when you’ve got two monsters raising their hand to jump in. That raises the question of whether the IndyCar guys couldn’t hack it this year, which Penske Racing President Jonathan Diuguid had to insist to press is not the case:

“The November test is difficult to glean performance stuff[,] but I think if you did glean performance [data], Josef and Scott were if not the top performing guys in those cars, they were on part with the guys we had there.”

(Newgarden, remember, was in the 2024 incarnation of this car and helped win Penske his first Rolex since 1969.)

Rather, Diuguid told Sportscar365, they decided to run three-driver squads for hand-wavey “administrative” reasons having something to do with driver seat time fairness, making fewer seat inserts, and fewer setup compromises.

To be clear, I absolutely believe this explanation to extent that I am already too bored to know the reasoning in more detail. I just always prefer the most fun driver lineup.

Scotty, we now know, does have a Rolex ride. Josef is not participating.

The WeatherTech Corvette last year was one of the coolest lineups on track. SVG is taking the year off from the Rolex to concentrate on NASCAR and has said he regrets doing it last year ahead of his first full-time Cup season. Connor Zilisch is driving the #31 Cadillac and going to win the race. McLaughlin hasn’t covered himself in glory in a Corvette GT3 yet, but he’s quick, and he certainly could.

What bums me out is that Robert Wickens is not in the lineup, at least for Daytona. The story of his heroic return to racing in the sprint rounds with special hand controls to drive this car — and be quick about it — was one of the best IMSA storylines last year, and a full-time drive was clearly close to happening in 2026. Marshall Pruett actually said it was happening on Monday, in a post that also blew DXDT’s cover on announcing Scotty, but apparently either he was wrong or things changed. DXDT full-time driver Mason Filippi’s co-driver for the sprint rounds has not been announced yet, so hopefully that’s Wickens’ job again.

Please enjoy article 2.2.3.a of the 2026 IMSA WeatherTech Championship sporting regulations:

“Manufacturers, Competitors, Drivers, Constructors, and any persons or entities associated with their entries must not attempt to influence the establishment of the Balance of Performance (BoP) or make any public comments regarding the BoP process, methodology, data, or outcomes, including but not limited to statements made through traditional media, digital media, or social media platforms.”

As in all motorsports series that employ censorship and fines, WEC teams now speak entirely in innuendos.

Actually, I’ve noticed IMSA competitors tend to tiptoe around BoP conversations already, as the series can make their racing lives miserable in other ways as punishment, such as by giving their car an unfavorable BoP. But now the gag order is in writing and violations costs money.

BoP is the most political part of sports car racing, and I honestly get why the series would want to prevent competitors from using the media as a weapon. While sanctioning bodies’ constant fiddling with BoP clearly causes stupid swings in competitive order throughout a season, teams are also blatantly dishonest about how they talk about BoP publicly, basically just doing whatever advantages them, as race teams are wont to do.

I think, on balance (😏), it’s the right thing to do balance lap times between cars of different makes and let their more particular strengths and weaknesses — and teams’ and drivers’ ability to execute — determine the winners and losers. I just wish the process wasn’t so fiddly, because it introduces errors all throughout the process, and that’s what competitors rightfully complain about. I am in favor of this BoP censorship policy in the meantime, but I want to see sports car racing regulators making tangible progress on finding less controversial ways to balance performance.

They finished P2 in GTD.

I’m inaugurating the Turning Fortune News section with the announcement that Ayhancan Güven is returning to the Rolex 24 at Daytona for his second appearance, this time with legendary Porsche shop Manthey Racing. Manthey is the team with which Güven won the 2025 DTM championship in one of the most exciting last-lap battles I’ve ever seen:

Watch on YouTube

Ayhancan Güven becomes the first-ever Turkish DTM champion by pouncing on Marco Wittman on the last lap of the last race of the season

Manthey is competing in IMSA for the first time in 2026 having dominated basically everywhere else Porsche 911 GT3s race. Güven is in one of two Manthey cars, most bad-assedly numbered #911 and #912; the champ is in the former alongside Thomas Preining, Ricardo Feller, and Klaus Bachler, all of whom are also fearsome drivers. After Daytona, Güven will head off for his new full-time job with Manthey’s World Endurance Championship team.

I would call Chan a “rising star” except clearly his star has already risen. Even aside from winning the toughest GT championship on Earth, his 2025 Daytona run with Wright in the #120 was fairly spectacular — they finished 2nd in GTD — so I can’t even imagine what’s coming this year.

The reason I chose this story to kick off News is that Chan is special to us from Daytona last year. Not only was the #120 the first race car to drive right past me, Güven starred in our first ever YouTube video because he was exceedingly generous with his time in the autograph line, giving Luke detailed answers to his questions. This year, I’m bringing a better microphone.

The grand finale of my first season going racing was right here at home. It actually solved a great lifelong mystery of mine. One of the few non-NASCAR racing memes to penetrate my childhood bubble was a gravelly-voiced radio ad talking about something called “Petit Le Mans” that played constantly in the summertime on 99X, the alt rock radio station to which I listened exclusively. I had no idea what it meant. I didn’t even know it had anything to do with auto racing. But it impressed itself upon my preteen mind as something I needed to figure out someday.

It turns out to be one of the greatest sports car races in the world, and since it takes place at my home track, I had to be there for the whole thing to cap off my 2025 racing season. Naturally, I got there before the haulers were even parked. Luckily, after a little while, a sizable contingent of the Bluesky racing squad came in for it, so it was a party every day.

This was my first time seeing Road Atlanta packed with people, and it was an absolute blast. To begin with, one of my favorite race cars of all time was there, and not just for show; it turned laps!

A BMW 3.0 CSL Group 4 car bearing number 25, the car and livery that won the 1975 12 Hours of Sebring

End-of-season vibes were high, and many antics ensued. I got to hang out with James Hinchcliffe for a bit in the fan zone as part of a Pfaff Motorsports sponsor do. We were treated to a (foot) race between Pfaff’s dinosaur intern, Brachiobrian, and a sporting young man.

Watch on YouTube

We got to see our beloved Mazda MX-5 Cup’s season come down to the wire at one of the greatest tracks I could imagine them racing at.

Watch on YouTube

Race 1 was a damn shame for Tyler Gonzalez, who was caught up in funny business and wrecked out of championship contention. He got another car out for race 2, but I found his totaled ride in the paddock later, waiting to be put out to pasture.

I had various end-of-year missions to accomplish, such as getting my Eversley hat signed by Ryan Eversley and getting a grid shot with him, co-driver Celso Neto, and the Precision Racing LA squad on the Michelin Pilot Challenge grid.

We also found Nolan Siegel a little farther up the grid, and his team were good sports about letting us isolate him like probably everyone else at the race wanted to.

Naturally, Road Atlanta was a flattering venue for that series as well:

Watch on YouTube

Before the season ended, I had to bid au revoir to my beloved AWA Corvette, with whom I spent an inordinate amount of time.

I had a mission within that mission, though, which was to meet AWA’s legendary engineer, Jeff Braun (father of Colin, who was somehow even busier that weekend), who is a host of one of my favorite podcasts ever, It’s Not the Car. I talked to the whole AWA team at once at one point, and no one knew where he was. I came back very early on the morning of the race and loomed for many minutes, and the mission was accomplished.

Jeff gave me a ton of time and explained how the only goal for Petit was to beat the #70 Inception Racing Ferrari, which would secure AWA its second Bob Akin Award spot in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. They would go on to do so, but not in the most delightful of circumstances; the #70 was involved in a horrible head-on crash on lap 1 of the 10-hour race. Fortunately, everyone was okay.

The WeatherTech paddock was an incredible place prior to the race. One of the most moving events was the ceremony marking the last race (for now?) of the Lamborghini SC63 prototype, where the whole team came out to sign the car and pose for pictures. It’s sad to lose a car from this amazing generation of prototypes, and the #63 had a great last race, too, finishing P4.

Not to be outdone in pomp and circumstance (though they were outdone in the race), Wayne Taylor Racing lined up in this very formal military-style formation.

Of course, it was the other Cadillac that won, and it was clearly the best all year. The #31 had just won at Indianapolis, and when I spoke to Jack Aitken before the finale, he called his shot. “Back to back, baby!” He was right.

I did make sure to tag the Acuras before they rolled out to the grid. Both cars raced with Turning Fortune affiliation.

The unambiguous star of the weekend for me, though, was the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR-LMH, which really is every bit as amazing as people say. It was cool enough standing still:

But — and I know everyone says this, but — you really have to hear it to believe it.

The pre-race grid ceremonies were absolutely packed and accompanied by live musicians. I cannot overstate how ready Georgia was to see 10 hours of sports car racing.

This was the first motor race I attended in person. Honestly, I was nervous beforehand. I didn’t know if I would feel comfortable there. I didn’t know if I would be able to handle the noise. I didn’t know if I would be able to follow the action and enjoy it as much as I could at home.

The answer to all of those is: I would.

This is the first installment in a format I am calling race notes. It does not even attempt to cover everything that happened at the race meeting. For a 24-hour sports car race, there are probably stories I will still be writing new posts about years from now. Race Notes are the most minimal posts I will write about races I attend in person, just to mark particularly poignant, memorable things. I will add to them over time, too, as I continue to process photos, uncover crumpled napkins I wrote on, or learn new things about the races after the fact.

Turning Fortune launched in January 2026, just before Luke and I set off for the next Rolex. But since I still have the opportunity to write Race Notes for every race I go to in my life, I’m going back to the beginning.
