Maybe they calculated that they would get the same amount of YouTube attention for denying him as they would for running him.

Short-track legend Lee Pulliam is one of those guys who spent his career working on racing instead of schmoozing and therefore never got a big break. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. cannot resist such a story and gave Pulliam a great Martinsville car, and Pulliam almost pulled it out. He led confidently throughout the race, but the unfamiliar equipment got the better of him. He missed shifts and spun wheels on restarts, eventually making the wrong kind of headlines by stacking up the field into a huge wreck. Don’t let that overwrite the fact that he got a top-five finish and took responsibility for the mistakes, which is a good teaching for O’Reilly Series drivers. Pulliam’s teammate, Justin Allgaier, pulled out another win. He really is the last of the Busch Series legends.

As for the Cup race, here are my headlines:

Shane van Gisbergen qualified fifth. Get your affairs in order, Cup drivers.

Chase Elliott got a win so early in the season that he surprised himself. It is very interesting to see him have an upturn in results now that people actually have to run consistently all year, because last year he showed that few of them can do that as well as he can.

He is a third-generation NASCAR racer, which is interesting in and of itself, but the lineage flows through the Modified Tour, which is a category I believe deserves higher stature. Those race cars are crazy. They may not have anything to do with O’Reilly Series stock cars, but at least they present a sheer difficulty level that ought to calibrate expectations correctly. Ryan Preece would be the best contemporary example of a modified driver making it in Cup, and he’s no slouch. I’d love to see Luke Baldwin make at least as big an impact.

We will shortly find out what it has taught Baldwin, as he will make his O’Reilly Series debut at Martinsville this weekend.

Aero, tires, and engine are all in the right place to revive the racing at many of NASCAR’s most beloved tracks. They may not race exactly like they did in whatever your personal nostalgic favorite NASCAR era was, but they’re starting to race analogously to the old days, defining their own era.

The NASCAR media scene did itself and the few people who pay this much attention a disservice by overhyping the potential impact of the new high-falloff tires and higher horsepower package at Darlington. They created some expectation that the Cup race would be an all-timer. It wasn’t, but it may have been something better in the long-term, which is a regular old race at Darlington.

In fact, all three series had good Darlington races. Corey Heim stole the Truck Series race from Ross Chastain in a very exciting finish, and Justin Allgaier stole the O’Reilly race from Kyle Larson, which one always loves to see.

What was great about the Cup race was that the best car won. It was no lottery, but it was certainly a trial. The cars were a handful for everybody, but Reddick suffered electrical problems and had to go and win the hottest race of the year so far with no way to cool off. Mike Joy called the win in a pretty funny way, saying Reddick had returned to winning “after a two-race losing streak.” That’s four on the year, if you’ve lost count.

It was an exciting day for RFK — Keselowski, Buscher, and Preece were all top-five runners throughout the day, they combined to lead 183 laps, and Brad won stage two — but they couldn’t hang on. You’ve been able to see them coming for a couple races at this point, though, so I think there’s more to come from RFK this year.

Also of note was Carson Hocevar, who got his best Cup finish ever in his best livery ever, a very well done Chili’s-sponsored Dale Earnhardt Wrangler car throwback. Hocevar finished fourth, and teammate Daniel Suárez finished seventh. So look out for Spire, too.

The syllables have gone from one to four, and the meaning has gone from one to zero.

The press release announcing this truly is a marvelous thing. It claims the new branding represents the series’ “Grand Prix intensity and global ambition.” I can translate that for you right now: “NASCAR makes people think of America, and (we believe) that dissuades Europeans from buying tickets.” Even better, they frame the decade-old category as the “ultimate stage for professional drivers in European touring car racing.”

Touring car racing?

Oh, I see. This is V8 “touring car” racing. That is, don’t think of NASCAR, the American organization that actually sanctions this. Think of Supercars, the Australian organization that doesn’t sanction this. I wonder how long the NASCAR relationship will carry on?

EuroNASCAR is already rolling out driver news with this catchy “NASCAR Euro Series V8GP” moniker, and I will give them this: If it were called the V8GP European Championship, it would be the thing they think it is. It isn’t, though. It’s the NASCAR European Series.

Apparently, that is not the case.

Dye was on some bootleg streaming app for people who like to open packs of baseball cards or something, and he started bragging about having no idea who David Malukas — driver of the Team Penske #12 Verizon Chevrolet in the IndyCar Series — was when they met at the St. Petersburg race weekend IndyCar and the Truck Series shared. Dye then went on to perform a homophobic caricature — apparently intended to be of Malukas — for an excruciatingly long time.

Dye has been suspended by NASCAR and his team and will be required to complete sensitivity training in order to return to racing. He posted an extremely bad Instagram apology. He will be replaced in this weekend’s Truck Series race at Darlington by A.J. Allmendinger.

This win put him ahead of Kevin Harvick on the all-time list, and his family was there to celebrate with him after the extremely difficult year they had last year both on and off the track.

Another storyline emerged in Vegas to watch this year: Tensions between former teammates Ross Chastain and Daniel Suárez have boiled over into a face-to-face confrontation. Their on-track encounters were not terribly severe, so whatever came up clearly goes back in their history.

I have been in love with the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series ever since. It’s pretty chaotic — there are a lot of cars, they’re very powerful, and the drivers are generally quite young — but its standout talents tend to go on to do great things (the name Connor Zilisch may ring a bell).

Well TA2 has a new name to put on your bell-ringing list: Helio Meza. He’s won the first three races this year, and he won from pole at Road Atlanta leading every lap. Watch him whenever you can. His team also has him racing in the NASCAR Mexico Series this year.

That was the one I thought projected the way I wanted to be seen. My secret favorite band, though, was Korn. That was the music that actually spoke to my soul, which I did not want anyone to see or hear from.

Nowadays, I am pursuing things — very publicly, too — that I definitely would have thought were cool in middle school but could never have admitted. I never allowed myself to explore, for example, NASCAR because it would have been deeply uncool. At our school, we made fun of NASCAR and people who liked NASCAR.

Well, now I know better, and now Jonathan Davis will wave the green flag at the Cup race in Vegas this weekend, and I will be smiling.

I find this attitude incredibly irritating and self-defeating, but fortunately most people don’t even know this attitude exists and watch Daytona, Atlanta, and COTA and love them, as I do.

Frankly, I thought the NASCAR races at Phoenix this weekend were a big step down into the normal midseason feeling that NASCAR is a grind. The races weren’t bad, and the outcomes were just, but there was nothing particularly distinguished, either. I know a lot of race fans find recovery drives through the pack to be inspiring racing — and Sheldon Creed, Shane van Gisbergen, and Sunday winner Ryan Blaney all provided excellent demonstrations of that — but to me that’s of a second tier to battles of evenly matched cars and drivers on challenging tracks. Don’t tell NASCAR this because they might not agree to do these anymore, but the big March weekend at Phoenix Raceway was comprehensively carried by IndyCar.

Not only was it sharing the Phoenix weekend with NASCAR — and thus facing a chance to be 40 MPH faster than the racing many more people than usual were tuning in for — the opener at St. Pete had been kind of a snooze, at least in summary. Yes, it had the usual great IndyCar racing throughout the pack, but Álex Palou dancing away with another championship is not a storyline likely to deliver a critical growth year.

Fortunately for the storyline, Phoenix turned it on its head. Palou wrecked out of contention early in the race, and with Josef Newgarden surging back to his traditional position at the front of any short oval race, there is now a championship leader other than Palou for the first time since the 2024 season. Palou’s incident coming up on Rinus Veekay may have been a bit of a spotter fail, and another potential spotter fail of the same nature took Will Power and Christian Rasmussen out of contention later on. All day, Rasmussen continued to earn his reputation as the craziest man in IndyCar short oval racing, and it would have been quite a romp for him if he’d been able to hang on and win.

More shoutouts are necessary. Shoutout to Mick Schumacher for qualifying FOURTH in his first oval race ever. He didn’t have a glorious finish, but he sure had a glorious start. Shoutout to Dennis Hauger for one of the best saves I’ve ever seen (seen below). And — Will Power fan that I am — I must reserve my final shoutout for David Malukas for taking the 12 car to pole. That guy really has to prove he deserves the equipment upgrade he got, and this is some pretty good proof.

Bowman’s form has not been where you’d expect a Hendrick driver to be for a long time, and now I’m starting to worry that it’s systemic.

Lionel’s work I am all too familiar with; they’re the ones who cancel production of all the diecasts of Black drivers’ cars after I order them. I go way out of my way to order my NASCAR diecasts from third parties or direct from teams because that is how bad The Official Diecast Brand of NASCAR™ is to deal with.

How did an industry that made the most famous race car drivers on Earth 25 years ago fall so hard? Well, I’m sure there is some macroeconomic explanation, but hopefully this consolidation indicates a new path forward for racing collectibles that actually takes advantage of the last 25 years of logistical advances, which have been, you know, considerable.

Oh, no. It’s not over. On the contrary, Richard Childress is now putting him in the No. 33 O’Reilly car to race at Rockingham, having signed him to a two-year part-time deal. Notice how the press release calls him a “skilled driver and motorsports enthusiast” but a “genius marketer.” They aren’t even hiding why they’re doing this.

Snider drives part time in the O’Reilly series, but at the Cup race at Circuit of the Americas, he was working the lane as an assistant pit reporter for FOX Sports when he was asked to put on a fire suit and helmet, get into Alex Bowman’s car, and drive it for the final stage of the race. Bowman was succumbing to some sort of health issue — which weirdly has not been disclosed even though we assume it was just your normal cool suit problems — and he had to pull in. Snider texted a little about breaking points with friend and fellow ringer Brad Perez, jumped into the #48, and finished the race without incident.

There shouldn’t be. After what we saw this weekend — especially in St. Petersburg with the Truck Series — it should be obvious that turning right from time to time has made the entire field better in all three series.

Well, that said, the O’Reilly series still has some work to do. No, Connor Zilisch didn’t win, but he did beat Shane van Gisbergen to pole. That is to say, Shane van Gisbergen was in this race, and yes, he won. At one point, he passed five cars at once and flashed them the deuce as he left.

On Sunday, though, things changed.

Now, Connor was in it. He drove a great race, he just didn’t get anything to show for it because of misfortunes. He is having the rough entry to the Cup Series that everyone should have expected because he is racing with people at a much higher level than the people he humiliated in Xfinity last year.

Shane was also, of course, in it. His road racing skills have clearly benefitted the whole team; Shane is now P5 in points, taking second in stage 1 and in the final result (plus another point for P10 in stage 2), but Ross Chastain won the first stage.

Christopher Bell, last year’s winner, placed third. His teammate, Ty Gibbs, showed a compelling fourth. Their teammate, Denny Hamlin — the guy who hates road courses — finished P10, which he said afterward was “like a win” because of how resistant he is to races with right turns. That feeling, however, may have been colored by something else.

Namely that Denny is the co-owner of the car that won the race. And last week’s race at Atlanta. And the Daytona 500.

Yes, the first driver in the history of NASCAR to win the first three races of the season was the driver of the No. 45 23XI racing Chumba Casino Toyota Camry, Tyler Reddick.

Álex Palou won, wow, no way. Everybody else fumbled the ball. The tires sucked; the soft tire lasted like 30 laps and made no difference. There was racing, don’t get me wrong, just none with Palou. What would have been the most interesting headline — Mick Schumacher’s first IndyCar race — has not even happened yet because Sting Ray Robb and Santino Ferrucci continue to waste space on the IndyCar grid and wrecked Mick out on his first lap. Mick’s takeaway was that he has to qualify better so he can stay away from the idiots. Good learning, Mick. Have fun at Phoenix.

MX-5 Cup also raced, and they were fun as always, but nothing remarkable happened. The conditions were pretty wet for the first race, but it mostly just resulted in crashing rather than standout performances. Bobby Gossett stuck it out and won his first MX-5 Cup race, so congratulations to him. Justin Adakonis also got his first win in race 2, congrats to him as well. Earl Bamber did fine. Sébastien Bourdais did not do fine.

The highlight of the St. Petersburg race weekend was the first ever street race of the NASCAR Truck Series. The star studs in the star-studded lineup did make their appearances. Colin Braun finished best of the guests in P9, but he was the one with meaningful NASCAR experience. James “Jimmy Hinch” Hinchcliffe finished right behind him in P10, which was actually the most impressive drive any guest had because he was turned around by Dario Franchitti early on, then turned himself around a couple times, and he still drove through the pack. But — against what probably anybody in the entire world expected — the star of the first ever NASCAR Truck Series street race was the NASCAR Truck Series.

Yes, the regulars came prepared, and they fought it out lap after lap. It was an honest-to-god street race, and it was won in marvelous fashion by Layne Riggs, whom I used to not like, but that is now completely wiped away. He trained in the Ford Racing simulator with Joey Hand for months for this race, and it showed.

I am so, so happy to see how much the increased emphasis on road and street courses has up-skilled all three NASCAR fields.

First of all, the idea of bedding in with Prime Video makes obvious sense given how well their run of Cup race broadcasts went last year, and I dare say that if Formula 1 can get away with bundling U.S. race broadcasts with Apple services, bundling NASCAR with Amazon Prime seems like an even better idea.

But moreover, NASCAR just doesn’t have the same juice for a dramatic year-long documentary as Formula 1 does: There are too many drivers and teams, and those don’t have enough global celebrity star power pressure on them to make for off-track jeopardy, which is what DtS fans are really watching for. As followers of Formula 1 racing knows, the actual motorsports part barely even factors into that show, and the race events are basically just montages in it. NASCAR is all about the races, and that made a DtS-style silly season show rather boring.

This idea of focusing on the Daytona 500 will not only make for a better show that is more worth watching alongside a racing season — rather than instead of one, as much DtS watching seems to be done — it will do exactly what NASCAR needs to do as a sport and raise the profile of the races themselves as the centerpiece. Hopefully they’re thinking about this in terms of which race to focus on next, rather than just what happens in the same setting year after year.

That is because all the All-Star Race means to fans at this point is that they have to read another epic poem about a new, unnecessarily complicated race format.

This year, there isn’t even any jeopardy; the whole field gets to start. That reveals the transparently profit-based reason this event continues. Nobody wants to have to tell their sponsors that they paid for an optional race they don’t even get to run.

Former competition director Chris Gabehart left Joe Gibbs Racing last year under mysterious circumstances, and suddenly JGR has sued him, alleging he stole competitively sensitive information for his future employers in ways that would be shockingly dumb and detectable if true — so much so that it’s hard to believe a guy as sharp as Gabehart could have done such things. He denies everything and says JGR is unwilling to consider forensic proof of a lack of evidence.

Taking things up a notch, Spire Motorsports — a team whose whole thing is taking things up a notch — came out in the wake of this announcement to counter-announce that Gabehart works there now. So in turn, JGR amended their complaint to add Spire to it and requested a restraining order to prevent Gabehart from working there for 18 months until everything is returned and assurances are secured.

I wonder if we’ll ever find out what really happened here.

The Truck Series race was an intense and remarkably disciplined affair that was compressed for time due to weather delays, with Spire teammates Carson Hocevar and Kyle Busch working together to learn the kids a thing or two, delivering yet another truck win for Busch. They did tandem burnouts that were both 10s out of 10. There were other notable performances throughout the field, though, including an impressive recovery drive on debut for Trans Am ace Adam Andretti. Also notable was the pretty average performance of last year’s champion, Corey Heim.

Watch on YouTube

The O’Reilly Series race was utter insanity in the best possible way and probably the most awesome NASCAR race I have ever watched in real time. The question on everyone’s mind was, “How can we stop Austin Hill?” The answer turned out to be “using Ross Chastain.” There were so many great drives, but the most shockingly delightful was that of Sheldon Creed, who finally — after 15 second-place finishes in the series — got himself a win. The final laps of this race — as well as Creed’s celebration and post-race interview — are mandatory viewing.

Watch on YouTube

Naturally, the O’Reilly race was not without its stupidities. JGR crewman Alex Morgan was fully hit by Taylor Gray’s car exiting the pit box, but he was unharmed. A significant portion of the other stupidities were caused by Corey Day. My sense of that guy is that he’s a very good dirt racer who has not yet learned to stop dirt racing.

As for the Cup race, while it wasn’t better than the first two, it was an inspiring display of where NASCAR as a whole is at right now, and you can read my full race notes from the track.

People watching atop their RVs are silhouetted against the track." />

Going to three (or even two) days of a NASCAR race weekend is a stretch for me in terms of family logistical goodwill, so my first opportunity to exercise my season tickets was to attend my second Cup race at EchoPark Speedway. Having never attended one when it was called Atlanta Motor Speedway, the new name is not as hard for me to say as it is for old timers, but I can tell you my affection for the place is just as strong as theirs.

The author’s five-year-old child looking quite at home at the race track

I only regret that I was unable to see the Truck Series and O’Reilly races on Saturday in person, because it was some of the best NASCAR racing I’ve ever watched live. Fortunately, I sent Ray with the tickets, and he brought along four newcomers to NASCAR. Lives were changed.

I had only two lives to change with a first Cup race, and one of them bailed on me (my eldest child). Fortunately, the always-game younger one, aged five, agreed to come along and dropped right into the spirit.

Stock car racing is enhanced by having somebody to pull for, and in my house, 23XI Racing’s Bubba Wallace is that guy. My dad’s from Mobile (where Bubba’s from), my mom’s from Chicago (where 23XI co-owner Michael Jordan was a basketball player of some renown) and went to college in North Carolina (where Michael Jordan’s from [she went to Duke, but whatever]), we’re from Atlanta (where we value both diversity and stock car racing), Bubba is an awesome racing dad like me… and so on.

Bubba is our guy, and I was representing. My section booed him during driver intros, so I stood up and waved my hat around and whooped as loudly as I could. My daughter joined me.

As the major player — and victor — in the historic antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR that was settled mid-trial last year, 23XI could be considered the definitive team of the 2026 season. They come into the year having secured the most meaningful financial concessions from France family ownership to teams in the sport’s history, which — crucially — involved the restoration of 23XI’s cars to chartered status. These huge off-track wins have to be backed up on track, though. That’s what really matters.

The author in Bubba Wallace (and Bobby Labonte) regalia

So naturally, Tyler Reddick — having gone winless last year — walked out and won the Daytona 500. Bubba finished 10th, and even 23XI’s designated “other guy,” Riley Herbst, finished P8, having secured the victory for Reddick in somewhat bumbling fashion. That sent 23XI to Atlanta leading the standings.

And speaking of standings, the settlement is arguably not even the biggest news going into this NASCAR season. Maybe the lawsuit was a catalyst, maybe it was just the constellation of a bummer period in NASCAR, the beginnings of an IndyCar resurgence, and the eclipsing of American racing by Formula 1, but over the past year, NASCAR has set about returning to its roots with some wildly popular changes.

The era of win-and-you’re-in Playoffs with a single-elimination championship round is over. The 10-race Chase is back, with the top 16 drivers in points after 26 races eligible for the championship. It’s a best-of-both-worlds arrangement that acknowledges that the notional “casual fan” who considers stock car racing interchangeable with ball sports does not exist — something everyone but NASCAR executives over the past couple decades has felt was screamingly obvious. Even worse, at least some years, the system has resulted in champions that were manifestly not the best driver of the best car for the best team. That’s over now. As the folksy marketing campaign with which NASCAR launched this season would say, Hell Yeah™.

Now NASCAR can just be NASCAR, and I really hope it will. One more change it would need to make would be getting rid of NASCAR Overtime, a rule that stupidly insists that a race can go on infinitely for wreck after wreck until someone survives, rather than ever — Heaven forfend — finish under caution. A wreck with three to go robbed me of the chance to watch Bubba Wallace win with my daughter at her first NASCAR race. That would still have been an amazing finish. Instead, the finish the fans got was a 10-minute red flag followed by a lottery. That’s not “free racing” or “getting what we paid for.” That’s staying way too late at the track and freezing our asses off while robbing a deserving winner.

At least the official winner was also deserving. The 45 not only ran up front all day but lost an entire fender and recovered. Going back to back for the first two races is a pretty amazing storyline for Tyler Reddick and 23XI. But here’s the most NASCAR-being-NASCAR-again thing about it: Despite his frustrating near misses in both races, Bubba is still second in the points, and — as it did in the glory days — that actually matters now.

There are more elements of modern NASCAR that are still finding their way back home, but I think they’re getting there. The cars are the main thing.

The era of NASCAR Cup cars resembling the cars fans drove to the track was over before NASCAR’s heyday, but the cars in the most popular eras still enabled stock car racing as it had been known. You still brought the most badass machine you could possibly sneak past tech, and they still drove like big ol’ American cars; you wheeled them like a maniac, and when — not if — you found yourself sideways, you could catch them.

The gen 7 Cup car is a modern race car. It’s a tightly regulated, almost entirely spec design. It is painstakingly precise. It is power-starved, and it is extremely aerodynamically sensitive. If you lose it at a track like the new high-banked configuration of Atlanta, it’s gone, and half the field is probably coming with you.

Some drivers (Kyle Busch comes to mind) have floundered in the transition. Others don’t know any different, which has its own effects on stock car racing, especially for those with no connection whatsoever to mechanical responsibility for the car they drive. Gone are the days of drivers keeping their sanity on track because they’d have to fix their car if they wrecked it. Even though this car costs astronomically more to fix, that’s not the careless young driver’s problem. Combine that with the win-and-you’re-in championship model that obtained through last year, and you can see how NASCAR may have developed a reputation for pretty stupid racing.

Well, don’t look now, but even prior to the championship changes, last year showed signs of NASCAR — not to mention Goodyear — getting this car dialed in for the various kinds of race tracks on the calendar. The uniformity and precision has enabled NASCAR to tune the car and the competition to each other, and they’re starting to gel. Maybe over the next couple years they can start opening up engines, aero, and other systems to some regulated forms of tinkering that brings that spirit back without losing the benefits of this cleaned up (and, don’t forget, much safer) style of car.

No, NASCAR is not back yet. But it’s heading back.

What of the NASCAR that’s here now?

Atlanta is one of the major sore spots for people who have been hurt by NASCAR’s wayward 21st century. Its original configuration produced too many legendary races to count. In 2021, it was redesigned and reprofiled with steeper banking, taking it from a bread-and-butter intermediate track to a sort of mini-superspeedway despite being way shorter and narrower than the places where they usually do this sort of draft-dependent pack racing. It was seen as a crowning example of the made-for-TV stupidity that defined that era of NASCAR competition, except this time they had literally bulldozed a sacred race track to impose it.

And look, it did suck at first. It managed to be terrifying and boring at the same time. Last year, though, I enjoyed the spring race, and as I was gearing up to make the summer race my first in-person NASCAR event, I was still hearing the same old chatter about how bad “new Atlanta” is, and it did not rhyme with what I had seen that spring. Then I went to what was, ironically, the first race with the place called EchoPark Speedway, and it blew me away. I was glued to every lap. It was the first time I had been to a race where I could see absolutely everything happening on track and didn’t even need to look at the tower, let alone my phone, which didn’t work anyway, and I could not have cared less.

So this year, when the Saturday doubleheader was a double-banger, I wasn’t the least bit surprised. I only hoped the Cup race could uphold the standard set the day before.

What we got was not an all-timer like the O’Reilly race was, or a master class like the truck race was, but instead we got what I think goes for a normal NASCAR race these days, and you know what? It was fun as hell. There was racing throughout the pack the whole time. There were a ton of leaders. There was teamwork and treachery. Were there idiotic moves and big, frustrating wrecks? Yes, there were. Welcome to NASCAR. Did they ruin the event? No, they did not. They did make it worse, but that is, as I said, the fault of NASCAR Overtime. Even with the overtime finish, Reddick’s win was still spectacular. And thanks to the configuration of EchoPark Speedway, it was never difficult to follow how it was playing out.

A few themes — aside from 23XI — have emerged over the first two races that I’m excited for this season.

Trackhouse is showing up. All three of their cars ran great in Atlanta, including Shane van Gisbergen, about whom I think everybody can now stop saying that he needs to “learn how to race on ovals.” This weekend at Circuit of the Americas should be a treat; even if no one else comes to play, SVG and Connor Zilisch will keep each other busy.

Spire is showing up. Carson Hocevar is a terrorist, but he’s getting his own results, you can’t deny that. And his new teammate, Daniel Suárez, is right behind him in points. Leaving Trackhouse for Spire may end up being a case of failing upwards for Suárez.

Gibbs, Hendrick, and Penske cars were all fighting at the front, of course, but they did not have an easy time of it. The Big Three have company now.

But most of all, I just think the NASCAR mood is a lot lighter than it was even last summer. Everybody I encountered at the track was happy. Even the people who booed Bubba thought it was awesome when I stood up for my guy. We were all goofing around the whole time, as it should be. NASCAR being NASCAR includes us, too, and I’m here for it.

FOX Sports revives iconic motorsports news brand SPEED

And they’ve wisely done it as an online show.

Kevin Harvick and Will Buxton are reuniting for the 21st-century version of SPEED, a cross-discipline hub for motorsports news that has never really been replaced since the channel was converted into what is now FS1. That’s all behind them now; 23XI won a settlement in the lawsuit — a historic financial win for Cup Series teams over France family ownership — and Tyler Reddick went out and won the Great American Race. Michael Jordan’s impact on the sport cannot be overstated at this point. Remarkably — given Riley Herbst’s usual irrelevance — all three 23XI cars finished in the top 10, giving the team a decisive early championship lead.

It was your usual crazy Daytona race, but this time it felt like the Daytona 500 is supposed to.

Lawrence Garrett “Cleetus McFarland” Mitchell spun and wrecked himself after six laps. He was crestfallen and contrite and embarrassed in his care center interview, and he clearly has love of the game. I’ll give him that, but what I won’t give him is how seemingly surprised he was by being taken three-wide at Daytona. The dude is just not ready for this.

As for Tony Stewart, his truck was also destroyed, but by someone else losing control next to him and sandwiching him into the wall. It was not a very good debut for the RAM/Kaulig program overall.

I was excited to see Carson Hocevar commanding the race early, but he ended up losing track position over and over again due to repeated punctures.

Chandler Smith won in a finish that was certainly exciting, but it was also goofy. They were crawling all over each other. In short, it was the Daytona truck race.

Nothing horrible happened in the Duels (unless you’re Corey LaJoie or Anthony Alfredo), but the people who raced in did so under pretty weird conditions.

Anthony Alfredo pulled it off in duel 2 but was disqualified in tech, handing his starting spot to B.J. McLeod, which we love because a significant prize money take for him could lead to more Katherine Legge drives during the season. As for Casey Mears, he was very much out until he was in, thanks to an incident that seemed dumb to me at first, but the more times I watch it, the more impressive I find Mears’ maneuvers:

The messaging says NASCAR will use the “zero-carbon bioethanol” fuel, but it will be “in combination” with Sunoco gasoline, whatever the hell that means. It probably means the pace cars or the jet dryers or something will use it. So far, I take this to be just another hand-wavey sponsorship, but it will insert itself all over NASCAR in places fuel is mentioned, so let’s keep an eye on it (and the fan reaction to it, which might be funny).

For one thing, it’s the first of two race weekends where IndyCar and NASCAR will split the bill; the Craftsman Truck Series will run at St. Pete, and IndyCar will run at NASCAR’s March Phoenix weekend. It’s almost as though things are starting to gel in 21st-century American motor racing finally.

But have you seen who is driving at St. Pete?

Sebastien Bourdais is doing the Mazda MX-5 Cup race (what????)

Dario Franchitti is doing the truck race

A lesser known but no less talented Andretti, Adam, is combining Truck Series duties with his usual (and dominant) Trans Am running this year, and he will be in a truck at St. Pete

No less than Mayor James Hinchcliffe is also doing the truck race, returning to the site of his first IndyCar win to make his first NASCAR appearance (all while running back and forth to the booth for his IndyCar TV duties)

UPDATE FEB 18: Earl Bamber is also doing the MX-5 Cup race

UPDATE FEB 21: Colin Braun is driving the Ram free agent truck

This all makes me wonder: Who will the guest star crossovers be at Phoenix?

I believe that race car drivers should be tough motherfuckers, and that if they physically can drive, they should. But I have been watching Brad Keselowski lurch his way back from slipping on ice and breaking his femur, and I am not convinced he can physically drive.

He did qualify for the Daytona 500 last night, and he was only two tenths behind the other rapid cars on his team. Honestly, RFK looks like the Ford team with the Daytona package to beat. That’s exciting. But Mr. K is walking with a sponsor-branded cane, and this injury has caused him the worst pain of his life. I hope we don’t see something sad happen.

I mean, I agree that it’s a crapshoot, but to me the point of watching stock car racing at Daytona or Talladega is to see who has the best car and — if they don’t win — compare it to the one who overcomes the circumstances. I did not have it on my bingo card that Richard Childress Racing would prepare the #8 as the fastest car, or that — in his 21st attempt — Kyle Busch would drive it to pole. My rooting for him feels super rewarded.

In other good news, Corey Heim’s #67 23XI entry was blazingly fast, and both he and my main man Justin Allgaier in the JR Motorsports #40 locked into the 500. JRM is now two for two on making the race, and after their great run last year, I would be overjoyed to see a strong result.

Also, in an amusing twist, Noah Gragson had his qualifying lap deleted because he did the hand-in-the-window aero trick that was literally just banned.

The race sold out for the 11th straight year, the purse is bigger than ever — I’d say the omens are good. As long as the weather doesn’t completely sap the event of joy like last year.

Things have gotten all professional and shit, and so the people who are crowing about having pulled this off sound like nerdy PR people when they do it. Don’t let that distract from the fact that NASCAR put up a billboard in Times Square with a screaming Cup car motor on it.

NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour veteran and occasional national-series starter Justin Bonsignore finally notched a win at the tour’s season opener there.
I can’t say the show was very entertaining; it takes a lot more work to make it possible to follow — let alone enjoy — a heavily edited race on TV than these reality show producers put in. Had I been in charge, we would have at least published videos of the full race days after the episodes came out, but I also suspect those production value shortcuts extended to the on-track operations.

People don’t buy it because they think Justin Marks and Trackhouse are going to be able to hang onto him. I do not believe they will be able to make him champion quickly enough.

The one compelling argument I had heard against my prediction is that Carson Hocevar was a shoo-in for the #48. Welp. No he ain’t.

The last-chance qualifier was one of the best short-track races the NextGen car has ever put on, for my money. In the main event, exciting prospects such as Shane van Gisbergen and Connor Zilisch looked to be in strong positions, especially as the weather got dicier. There was some drama about whether they could keep going, NASCAR declared the race wet, everybody changed tires, and we more or less thought NASCAR had finally found its balls and had set us up for an all-timer.

Folks, it was not an all-timer.

Ryan Preece — a real, honest-to-god race car driver — won handily, his first win in a Cup car, and that was nice and deserved. It was fun to celebrate afterwards, but it was hard to enjoy during the race.

Watch on YouTube

Kyle Larson started on pole, but he ended like this:

Forgot to post last night. This car has seen some things.

— John Newby (@johnnewby.bsky.social) Feb 5, 2026 at 8:54 AM

Chase Briscoe became my public enemy no. 1 by taking out everyone I wanted to win this race in one fell swoop, and even as plucky drivers continued to try to win the race, the same old boring guys kept constantly wrecking each other and neutralizing any progress. It was a 50-mile race that took three hours. They dropped it from network straight to FS2 after it was clear it wasn’t ending anytime soon. In short, NASCAR is back, baby. Hell yeah.

Here’s the highlight reel. I’m sure it’ll be funnier this way.

It seems to me that the people responsible for the almost-entirely-bad media decisions in motorsports have been slow-walking the actual test of the widespread conventional wisdom that people whose primary value is large audiences who watch their videos on social media can be taught to drive race cars and thereby benefit the sport. If I were using this theory to justify my salary as the cHiEf iNnoVAtiOn ofFicER at some racing series headquarters, I would be hesitant to test it, too, because if the influencers suck at driving, it would all fall apart.

Given that, I applaud the courage in letting these guys race in a NASCAR event on NASCAR’s biggest weekend, which is at the beginning of the year. It rips the band-aid off, and if they’re actually good, fine, they can do another race or two this year, and if they aren’t, now we will all finally know.

It is big news, therefore, that Flo has bulked up enough to expand into the Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television (FAST) market, which I’m actually beginning to believe might someday break the dam and liberate us from legacy broadcasting models. The FloRacing 24/7 channel — which is already available on the streaming service and is a good option when there’s nothing on live — will now be available on Prime Video and Fubo, i.e. on ways to watch streaming TV that a meaningful number of people already use.

NASCAR has already been an important partner with Flo, with lots of NASCAR Regional racing (including the Whelen Modified Tour) streaming there, and in related news, Flo will now simulcast some big races with NASCAR’s own FAST channel, which is really good, and which is now available right in the NASCAR mobile app in advance of this season. It’s finally almost easy to watch racing!

Friday activities are still scheduled, and they’re trying to cram all the Cup action into Sunday, so we may still have a race, but it’s not going to be the rowdy Madhouse party we all want.

NASCAR has made a string of popular moves lately, and I would like to suggest one more: Move the Clash back to Daytona permanently, and have the All-Star Race at Bowman Gray.

Maybe it will now.

People don’t like the Roval, it hasn’t produced a great race in a while, so be it. More much-needed fan service.

However. When it was just eliminating “win and you’re in” playoff eligibility, I refused to believe the conspiracy theories that Shane van Gisbergen humiliating the Americans in 2025 was the true motivation for finally making competition changes that were long-needed for more important reasons. But now that there is no longer any road course race in the Chase, my brow is beginning to furrow.

But like, if you’re going to have a road course in the Chase, make it Watkins Glen. That would even make sense in the calendar. Instead, they did the opposite this year and moved Watkins Glen to May. I was eavesdropping.

Should-be FIA president Tim Mayer is traveling to Daytona today where he says he will meet with NASCAR CEO/chairman and IMSA team owner Jim France during the Rolex 24 weekend. Mayer is looking for his next move after his doomed but symbolically important FIA presidential campaign, and he says it would be nice to find a “paying gig.”

Mayer was catching up with an old friend — Julie Bentley, president of the International GT racing series — at the gate for a Wednesday afternoon flight from Atlanta to Daytona Beach. I was, uh, well, eavesdropping, and now we are all on the flight to Daytona together. I am sitting next to a guy who spots for Graham Rahal in IndyCar. He used to spot for the RLL BMW prototypes at IMSA races, but that working relationship did not survive BMW’s transition of that program to the European W Racing Team that runs the cars in the World Endurance Championship. He wasn’t going to be working the Rolex at all, but he got a last-minute call from a friend to spot for the Era Motorsport #18 LMP2 running Jacob Abel, Ferdinand Habsburg, Naveen Rao, and Logan Sargeant.

Anyway, that’s all completely irrelevant. Mayer gave a fascinating account of the FIA presidential campaign and how self-appointed-president-for-life Mohammed bin Sulayem recruited select regional leaders to lock out the ballot for him. No new scandals or anything were revealed, but Mayer figures one will bring down MBS sooner or later.

“Mohammed is one of those guys where you’re either an enemy or you’re a future enemy,” Mayer told Bentley, and this paranoid style of motorsport governance will surely fail, as motor racing runs on friendships, and MBS will eventually have none.

Mayer was seated in first class. I intended to say “Thank you for trying” to him as I passed in the aisle, but he was extremely conspicuousky fake-listening to his phone while looking out the window.

One must make headlines to succeed at these things. In the new year, Ram has made two.

One is that they are awarding one of their Truck Series seats to the winner of a reality show. Now, people will scoff at this. I have seen nothing but people scoffing at this. But I will reserve judgment until it comes out, because I would like to remind everyone that making motor racing into a reality show has been fairly successful recently. To be good, this show would have to both successfully pick a competent NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver and actively increase a large audience’s engagement with and literacy in motorsports. Could it do all that? Sure! Let’s see if it does.

The other headline is that Tony Stewart is coming back to NASCAR racing to drive one of these trucks AT DAYTONA. Maybe this is shocking because Smoke has been doing anything other than NASCAR for 10 years and seemed to be totally, permanently fed up with it. In other words, this was probably a very large line item in Ram’s NASCAR budget.

It has gone back to a 10-race Chase but with some significant scoring and seeding differences from last time.

Winning a race is worth a major gap in points compared to that between any other positions, which I find to be an excellent replacement for win-and-you’re-in. Everyone who blames WaYi (yes, I did that) for the kamikaze style of racing of the previous era is absolutely right, but I believe it is also still good to incentivize winning and racing hard instead of cruising for points. It’s also good to award stage points, since it keeps people pushing throughout the race. These are mechanics that actually make NASCAR racing exciting, and now they will finally matter throughout the whole season.

Some people have also complained about the fact that the cutoff position for the Chase is P16 — they think there should be fewer cars — but that makes no sense to me. The more cars there are in the Chase, the closer to a normal motorsports championship it is, and it’s not like the P16 car is going to be able to leapfrog everyone and win the championship like they could before. They’re going to have to be absolutely magnificent for 10 weeks, and if they do that, hell, crown ’em.

There are also reasonable business reasons to start with many contestants, and I feel like modern fans are not understanding enough of such things. In order for motorsports to be good, you have to, you know, have motorsports at all.

In a way, this race had the most riding on it for me, other than my first ever. Growing up in Atlanta in the 1990s, NASCAR was the epitome and symbol of what motor racing was. Culturally off limits to me, barely penetrating my Blue Tribe defense shields, I nevertheless managed to know who Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon were, what they did for a living, and what their cars looked like.

By the summer of 2025, despite already following Formula 1 fanatically and even learning about (and falling in love with) IndyCar — and even having watched the entire 2025 NASCAR season up to that point! — it still felt forbidden to me. Only by going to my legendary hometown track would I be able to know once and for all whether I belonged in the tribe of American auto racing.

I came prepared, bringing two equally curious childhood friends, Rob and Joe. Joe had apparently been into racing for years and just never thought any of the old crew wanted to know about it. Joe brought a friend of his, Ben, who had gotten into racing more recently and was just starting to branch out from F1. I had met him earlier that month when he and Joe came over to my house to watch a couple hours of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. After this Cup race, I’d say I have a proper local racing squad.

This photo is endlessly funny to me because 12, 45, 3,491 is such an absurd twist to what would otherwise look like a totally boring group of NASCAR fans

To my surprise, delight, and relief, the crowd at Atlanta Motor Speedw— uh, I guess I mean eCHoPArk SPeEDwAY was as diverse as it was massive. There were many people meeting the description of who I would expect to attend a NASCAR race, but they were pleasant and welcoming. The age range was also much wider than I was expecting, though, the gender mix seemed even, and even the skin colors and nationalities — and even possibly sexualities!? — on display were remarkably varied. In short, it seemed an accurate sample of Atlanta, providing another reminder of why I moved back home. And to cap it off, two guys I’ve known since we were three came with me to the race.

The weather was a bit sketchy-sketch before the green flag, but it turned out fine

As for what NASCAR racing is like in person, it is one of the few things I can imagine surviving this much hype and mystique around it for my nearly 40 years of life. If automobiles please you, the appeal is instantly obvious. There’s nothing like the roar and the thunder of the cars, and on a medium-length steeply banked track like this, you can watch and hear them all the way around the lap.

Watch on YouTube

The race was great. A pretty big wreck took out a lot of fast cars at the front, so we got to see some different guys try to seize the opportunity, and they raced through the pack and all the way to the end.

Watch on YouTube

I must admit, Chase Elliott’s unspectacular (though high-scoring) season and his seemingly indifferent personality had not really interested me in this first NASCAR season I followed, though I was aware of his reputation. That changed at this race. Running a funky livery drawn by 11-year-old Rhealynn Mills — a pediatric cancer patient in Atlanta — in support of Elliott’s foundation, our local boy got him his first win in a year, and everybody loved it.
